Since its formation in the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in 2008, the Quintet Frontela has been winner of contests as important as the 5th Contest of Chamber Music “Higini Anglès” of the Provincial Council of Tarragona (2009) or the “Permanent Competition Young Performers Jeunesses Musicales of Spain” held in Bilbao in November of that year. They have also been awarded at the 14th Music Performance Competition “L’Arjau” of Barcelona and 25th Music Prize “Ciutat de Manresa”. They have been coached from the beginning by the oboe professor of ESMUC (Advanced Academy of Music of Catalonia), Dolors Chiralt, and have received advice from prestigious personalities from the world of music as Joan Enric Lluna, Vicens Prats, Lorenzo Coppola, David B Thompson, José Vicente Castelló, Enrique Sánchez Ali Groen and Salvador Brotons.
Among their performances include those offered to the Auditori de Barcelona, the Palau de la Musica Catalana (recorded and issued by the radio “Catalunya Música”) in Torroella, the 15th series “Cloister of Sant Domènech” of Peralada and two tours arround the Balearic Islands and Catalonia in December 2010 and March 2011. They have also performed in Madrid (Foundation Joan March) and Gijon in the annual convention of Jeunesses Musicales of Spain. The works worked by the Quintet Frontela represent the epitome of music for wind quintet. The group has a repertoire of quality, broad and diverse special interest in contemporary music. Proof of this is that young composers like Ximo Tarin or Raquel García Tomás are writing works specifically for Frontela Quintet. The name of the quintet is a tribute to the Cuban pianist Ivet Frontela, as it was with whom they performed together for the first time.
